Sample of compost under microscope. There is a significant abundance of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes) evident

Memo #10: Under the Microscope - Exploring an Invisible Universe

Jul 17, 2025Desnudo Coffee

Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes... words that once seemed foreign to me, have now become the protagonists of my fascinating journey into the microscopic realm. This minute kingdom unveils itself as a fundamental piece in the puzzle of soil fertility that is so integral to what we're trying to achieve with Desnudo.

Protecting the coffee soils of the farmers we collaborate with safeguards their ability to produce food and therefore positively impacts their futures. Delving into the microscopic world of the soil we need to protect marked a personal transformation for me. In learning how to create compost and compost tea (mediums rich with microorganisms), I had to familiarize myself with the common microscopic forms of life in our soil.

Through the lens of the microscope, I could observe diverse invisible life forms, their movements, their intricate dance of life. On the surface, we see the compost and organisms within restoring the soil health above. As I worked, I felt a metamorphosis of my perception of the world around me, deeply connecting me with nature on yet another level.  We hope you see, too, the difference in quality and taste that healthy soil and coffee harvests gifts to you in each Desnudo cup of magic.

Thank you for coming along on this journey with me,

Manolo
