Ā Being at the source has not only allowed us to enhance the quality of coffee but also to identify and address challenges faced by coffee farmers. One of the most glaring and concerning issues is soil degradation, often stemming from the excessive use of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers on the farms.
Take the case of MartĆn Horta, one of the most enthusiastic producers we collaborate with. MartĆn grappled with an overgrowth of weeds on his farm, leading him to apply herbicides to specific areas. Unfortunately, the herbicides didn't just eradicate the weeds; they left the soil parched, infertile, and eroded. During one of our visits to his farm, we proposed a biological solution to tackle the weed problem.
Enter the project we've dubbed "free chickens" We donated over 50 hens to be systematically rotated across various sections of the farm. The primary aim was for the chickens to serve as a biological weed control method, eliminating the need for chemical applications that harm the soil. Beyond our expectations, the chickens brought about additional benefits, producing manure that naturally fertilizes the soil. Moreover, they proved to be an excellent source of food and eggs for MartĆn and his entire family.
I'm excited to share a glimpse of this project with you through thisĀ video.
Canāt wait to hear your thoughts!
With love,
Manolo
